Fix your vowels: the perception and production of Spanish vowels by Dutch learners

2. Summary of research

It is common knowledge that foreign learners struggle when it comes to producing the sounds of the target language accurately. Research in second-language speech acquisition has shown that in order to achieve native-like production of sounds in a foreign language, the learner must first become proficient in perceiving these sounds. That is, if Dutch listeners perceive Spanish vowel sounds through their L1categories, they are likely to produce them through their first language (L1) categories, i.e. in a non-native way, thus with a foreign accent.

The study has the following objectives: 1) to thoroughly assess the perception and production of L2 Spanish vowels by Dutch learners, 2) to conduct a longitudinal study investigating the perception and production of Spanish vowels by Dutch learners during a ten-week computer-assisted training, 3) to empirically test the Multiple Categorization Assimilation of Escudero‟s (2005) L2LP model, 4) to improve and test the vowel training tool Fix your vowels , which was elaborated on in a previous study, and designed to accelerate and improve foreign vowel production.
